Demise of Movie Theaters

Technology has advanced quickly, we are at the point where many innovative products thought impossible are becoming a reality. One of the more recent innovations are virtual reality headsets, which can be used for viewing footage produced by 360 degree cameras or virtually generated worlds. This greatly immerses the viewer in the story, completely isolating themselves from the outside world. So as these headsets become more popular and video technology advances what will happen to movie theaters?

The concept of the movie theater began as a way to let people escape the realities of real life but have evolved to also function as a place of social gatherings. Therefore, when movie viewing becomes an individual experience it negates the need to go out to escape reality. People leave the setting of their home without actual leavings their home since the technology has the ability to remove one from one’s reality and it is accessible from home. People who go to the movies for social experiences would experience each film differently depending on what aspects of the footage each person views. I believe that as the technology becomes more accessible movie theaters will slowly dwindle away. Of course this is under the circumstance that 360 degree cameras become the new mainstream way of filming movies. I cannot see how film can improve beyond the slight improvements in the quality of images so the only way to go forward is virtual reality. Although it is hard to predict the future so who knows what else will be developed knowing the innovative abilities demonstrated through the technologies developed in recent years.
